Drought in NE Brazil

The NE of Brazil is suffering its worst drought in decades leading to widespread death of cattle, power blackouts, soaring prices for potable water and failing crops in one of the countries emerging agricultural frontiers.

"We are experiencing the worst drought in 50 years, with consequences that could be compared to a violent earthquake".


The Ministry of National Integration have estimated that 10 million people are being affected by the the water shortages, making it the most significant drought in many years. In an email to the news agency Reuters, Eduardo Salles, agricultural secretary for Bahia recently stated "We are experiencing the worst drought in 50 years, with consequences that could be compared to a violent earthquake".
